Entertaining Ethics

“A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd.” -Max Lucado
Imagine our nation attending the Symphony Orchestra, all on the same night. The ones in the crowd play the role of the “mainstream” citizens. The ones composing the orchestra itself, are the people who still dwell on the old America. They are the ones who respect freedom of speech, right to assemble, right to bear arms and every other moral James Madison and our other founding fathers endorsed as they proposed the Bill of Rights.
Now, imagine this same scenario, but with all of the political and community leaders instead of the entire nation. The crowd, of course, would be the governors and congressmen whom say whatever makes the people happy. The orchestra? You guessed it. These are the politicians and leaders whom heed to the ethics they have known since birth. The conductor is the leader of the people, in our case the president. This person is the one bombarded by different virtues and demands, with all of the people, crowd and orchestra, saying, “Outlaw this. Sign this. Affirm this.”
We are beginning to see political campaigns and advertisements. I realize that elections don’t actually commence until November. However, now is the time that we can truly get to know our candidates, the people who will be taking the governmental batons. These men and women will claim the reins on the primitive steed we know as America.
I say this with dejection in my tone, but our system of political leaders is more broken and further from our fore fathers than ever before. As we review the past year, events have occurred that Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson would be ashamed of. As of January 6, 2014, same-sex marriage is legal and encouraged in 17 states. Since Roe v. Wade in 1973, abortion has coaxed its way into countless lives across the nation. Twelve states have been influenced- literally- by marijuana. These are issues that the men who signed our rights into action would blush at. They would be thoroughly embarrassed with how social affairs are being managed.
The condition of our nation not only depends on political involvement, but also participation from community leaders. One prevalent career that we encounter, especially in the South, are the preachers of our community. A religious leader that was the headline of almost every news channel on Sunday, was Pope Francis. Eyes watched every move he made as he prayed over various territories for peace and prosperity. Another religious leader that I have the honor of sharing blood with is Charles Martin, my great uncle. This is a man who stands in front of a crowd every Sunday and presents a message to the people. Without down-home pastors like him and my own pastor, Rick Porter, this country would fall into the pit of paganism that it is carelessly dancing around. It is men like these that hold the ties on a struggling nation that would otherwise fall apart. I commend these two men, and the others, on being the spiritual glue to this religiously broken country.
So, as you listen to debates and speeches from leaders across the state and country, compare their words to those of the Constitution. Better yet, compare their words to those of the Book of which our country was built upon. The Bible is the instruction manual for our leaders. If they attend to it throughout all social and political matters, then our nation will make it far.
Do you think that our country is politically stable? Or are you disappointed to how it has fallen from its roots? I would love to hear your feedback via email. Thank you for reading. God bless.
