From Abraham Lincoln to Mahatma Gandhi, our world has seen some amazing leaders that have left footprints on the heart of humanity. Without these people’s influences, we wouldn’t be able to look back with a smile or look ahead with motivation. As you all may know, a highly influential and widely adored leader has seen his last day in this world.

Nelson Mandela is known as the face of activism and inspiration, especially for African-Americans. Mandela was revered around the world for his defiant acts against apartheid, or segregation, and eventually spent nearly three decades in prison for his courage.

Born as Rolihlahla Mandela, Nelson was dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives everywhere he went and in everything he did. Starting in his thirties, Mandela got involved in politics with the intention of improving the economical and physical state of life for his fellow South Africans. He was charged with high treason towards the government and acquitted on the spot. After stepping down as president in South Africa, Mandela dedicated the remainder of his life to ending global poverty and helping to resolve wars and conflicts throughout Africa.

It is because of leaders like Mandela that our world has survived. As you look at not only presidents, but also civil rights leaders and activists of all types, it becomes clear that bravery and honor are the foundation of our country.

Whether it be Susan B. Anthony redesigning America’s paradigm for women’s rights or Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier of baseball, our nation’s historical figures have changed the outlook of our people.

Take a moment to think about what today would look like if it weren’t for people stepping up to the harmful words that were once used as weapons to degrade fellow human beings. There would still be designated restrooms and water fountains for the separate races. Inequality would not only be encouraged, but it would be at its peak and would be accepted as a ‘social norm’.

Countless marches and protests throughout years of rebellion against labels have shaped our country into an object of integrity and honor. Instead of tolerating the brands that were thrust upon them, they chose to challenge the threat of being the minority.

Some leaders may be better than others. That is more transparent as we look at some of our leaders today. There are some governmental figures in our own nation that don’t live up to the visions and morals our founding fathers stood behind. Nevertheless, we can be thankful for all of the Dr. Kings and Rosa Parks out there who aren’t afraid to take a stand for not only their own beliefs, but the beliefs of others.

World-changers like Martin Luther King, Jr. only come once in a blue moon. Though the trail of heroism has ended for Nelson Mandela, his legacy will live on forever in the hearts of millions.

Did Mandela’s journey inspire you? I would love to hear it via email.
